British born Andrew has been on the road since he was in his late teens. An irrepressible traveller, he has lived and worked in Asia for 15 years, for the last decade running his own import business specialising in antique colonial furniture and rare crafts from India. He tracks down his pieces one by one through the villages by motorcycle and has thus developed his knowledge and love of India; both the land and its people. Also a successful travel photographer, Andrew works for many of the world’s most famous guidebooks.

At every opportunity he is off exploring for new treasures; be it tribal art or searching for a stunning new location to capture on camera, which often takes him far afield into the most remote and richly cultured reaches of India. It is this wealth of experience which makes him an expert traveller and a knowledgeable guide on the road. When he met Raju it was a natural progression that between them a new kind of adventure travel company was to be formed, and Live India was born.

Raju is from the Western Himalaya region of India. Born into a family with traditional roots and a strong travelling background he founded and still runs one of the first travel and trekking companies in the Himalayan region. Raju has a vast knowledge and empathy with the mountains and understands the nature and the cultures that abide there.

He has led many high altitude treks for explorers, botanists, and adventurers who need to access these areas and today owns a beautiful trekking lodge in a small village situated in the lofty Kullu Valley where he lives with his family. Raju is a master chef who serves the most delicious dishes garnished with fresh herbs from his roof garden. He has a deep love for the Himalayas and a passion to introduce people to some of the inner secrets of India that few people know about, so it is our great good fortune to have him working with us, showing us around his homeland and amazing us with his in-depth knowledge and superb culinary skills.

The Royal Enfield

These bikes have a four stroke, single cylinder engine that not only look good but sound terrific too. You will ride the latest models of Royal Enfield 350 and 500cc Bullet on our journeys. The 500s are primarily for the Himalayas. They are great bikes to ride and the ideal option for India. A long wheel base provides increased stability and road grip compared to other bikes, making it ideal for long distance travel. The Royal Enfield may be an old-fashioned, traditional bike but the latest models have the gearing the “right” way around, electric start, front disc brake and a five speed gear box. These machines were originally commissioned for use by the police and military as they were solidly built and the most powerful bikes on the road at the time, and still are to this day. The low centre of gravity and sturdy construction make them ideal for comfortable touring.

With Live India you can ride as fast or slowly as you like. Our guides are sensitive to individual needs and capabilities. So whatever your biking experience, you’ll find there’s no pressure - this is a holiday not a race!

We also have the essential back up of support vehicles and crew. Our bikes are maintained by our mechanic Tani and his assistant Nur who will check each bike at the end of each day to ensure it is in peak condition for the following morning. All Live India’s Enfields are very well-maintained bikes at the start of your trip, but if the bike experiences any problems it will be repaired or replaced; Raju will be driving in the jeep behind us with the spares. Also in the jeep will be the medic, Neeraj. The old luggage van, affectionately known as ‘Sita’, is driven by Vikram. This carries our belongings to keep us light on the road so all we need to do is watch the beautiful scenery unfold before us.
