Ladakh - Roof of the World Tour

Dates   25th June - 11th July 2016

Over the centuries men and women have been pulled towards the Himalayas to conquer their peaks and explore the intricate labyrinths of their hidden valleys. In the early 1990s the Indian government opened a unique road into the remote regions of Spiti, Lahaul and Ladakh spanning five of the highest mountain passes on Earth and crossing some of the most rugged, deserted and beautiful landscapes ever seen.

This road, where no road should rightly be, links the town of Manali with the deepest regions of Ladakh. The area is home to the ancient religion of Tibetan Buddhism which still flourishes in the impossibly located and awe inspiring monasteries that cling precariously to the sides of cliffs of this high altitude wilderness. The friendly and welcoming Tibetan monks that inhabit this stark and enchanting landscape do so in order to dissolve in the immense silence that can be found here.

To travel this region by motorcycle will take you on a tremendous journey of adventure, beauty and mystery.

Starting in the lush Himalayan foothills of the Kullu Valley you will cross the first of many passes, the Rohtang at 13000 ft (3900m) from where you will enter a different world of magnificent peaks which even during the summer months, is possessed of a wild and desolate beauty.

From the Rohtang onward you will climb more passes including the three highest motorable passes in the world. The Khardung La which is the highest at 5615m (18,380ft), the Tanglang La at 5350m and the Chang La which is the third at 5300m, as well as many others whose names mean nothing to you now but by the end of your trip will be indelibly etched in your memory.

You will be riding in areas of such pristine mountain wilderness that the landscape will totally absorb you and you will be sleeping under the stars at heights of up to 4200m in terrains that are only inhabited by nomadic tribal herders during the summer months when they can graze their animals.

The vastness of the mountains, the altitude and the gentle culture of the Tibetan people combine to give you an immediate insight into how small and insignificant we are as human beings. This is not only a magical bike ride but an epic journey into the mountains that will stay with you forever.

There will be times that the road will be steep and nasty with an ever present horrible drop nearby and oncoming trucks to deal with. The road surface itself will range from cruisey, fast, tarred stretches to almost trail bike riding on gnarly, rocky, rubbly corners with lots of gravel and the inevitable river crossings.

Make no mistake this is rough riding on the roof of the world that will challenge you at every level both physically and mentally.

That being said, if you are fit and strong and have riding experience on loose surfaces, you can do this. Many men and women have, and have returned home transformed and emboldened by what they have seen and experienced here. We don’t use this term liberally but this journey is a life changing event.

Since you have made the significant effort to ride all this way, we believe you will want to see and do all of the very best things that this incredible “land in the sky” has to offer.

You’ll ride to two of the breathtakingly gorgeous lakes that are to be found in the region during the course of your trip as well as visiting and staying overnight in the mighty Nubra valley which even in Ladakh is deemed as remote.

It seems so easy reading this from the comfort of your own home but with one click of the mouse you can be joining a small friendly group of travelling companions tackling what is undoubtedly the most exciting motorcycling adventure to be had on the planet.

As ever, we hope you’ll join us and look forward to meeting you.

The Route

Live India Motorcycle Tour Goa

Accomodation

On this tour as ever you will be staying in the very best accommodation available.

This means characterful mid-range hotels that are full of charm and are our insider traveller’s secrets that we don’t even tell our friends about lest they get too booked up! For the remote parts of the trip you will be staying in everything from peoples mountain homes that are converted to receive guests in the summer months (homestays), to the most comfortable luxury yurt style tents (with ensuite) out in the high altitude wilderness.

Food

Food will be simple tasty and good. We have to eat what the locals eat up in the mountains because you guessed it, there isn’t anything else available! Never mind, because it is just exquisite. Local seasonal produce, fresh ingredients and home cooked family recipes tried and tested over centuries and laced with delicate spices ensure that whatever is being cooked really has never tasted so good. These dishes are not hot and spicy like in South India but deep and flavoursome in a way you would not have tasted Indian food back home. You will get some organic free range meat too in most places so whether you are a carnivore or a veggie, rev yourself up for a superb culinary experience that varies between every place you eat.

Extra Notes

Although some of the terrain is extreme, this is not an extreme biking trip; it is a holiday, albeit an adventurous one. We are not racing through it without time to drink in all the wonders you will see. As with all of our rides we want you to have the time to enjoy and take in the landscapes you are riding through, chat with the locals and just relax in some really wonderful locations. Nevertheless as you can see there is some very tough riding to be done, so by necessity some of the days will be long as there is simply nowhere to stay between some of the places you are travelling to. However, you won’t be facing any mad main highways, as on your second day, you will fly from Delhi up to the peaceful Kullu valley in the foothills of the Himalayas from where you will begin your trip. At the end you will fly back from Leh to Delhi where you will stay a couple of nights and have a full day for sightseeing and shopping before departing home.

We will always have the back up of the support team and vehicle with us so if at some points ie a river crossing you need some help, we will be there for you and in the small groups we like to travel with, a team spirit quickly emerges as everyone chips in to help each other.

This trip is less about the difficulty of the road than your ability to ride it. When the going is tough we ride at slow speeds. Riders will often split into groups on the road according to their confidence and we encourage this so that everyone is riding within their comfort zone. There are two guides with assistants so everyone is well looked after.

The weather in these regions can be unpredictable. Although we choose the best time of year to ride here the climate can intervene and force us to rapidly change the itinerary. This is all part of the adventure and in joining this trip you must take this into account. We will always do our utmost to ensure the best experience for you despite what the weather throws at us.

For those of you who would love to join us but are unsure of your ability to handle it, please do give us a call and we can discuss it with you.

Pillions with some rough road experience are welcome, don’t worry you can get in the 4 wheel drive for any river crossings if you like even though they are shallow.
