Bhutan Tour

Dates   20th October - 4th November 2018
8th - 23rd October 2019

Almost unheard of, this idyllic country is nestled between Tibet and India and sits below the huge mountains of the Great Himalayan Range. The landscape gently descends from the 7000 metre peaks on its northern borders in undulating waves of green forested hills through a patchwork of mountain ranges and valleys that were cut over the centuries by a rush of streams and rivers until it settles into open savannah on the Indian plains in the South.
Today, approximately 72% of the total land area of Bhutan is under forest cover, 60% of which falls under protected areas comprising of 10 national parks and sanctuaries. It would be hard to find any other nation that has so successfully managed to preserve and protect its rare ecology. It is in these far-flung, barely visited parts of Bhutan where you will experience many unrivalled days motorcycling on small winding roads through breath-taking scenery.
Perhaps Bhutan’s greatest gift to our modern world came back in the early days of 1972 when the fourth King of Bhutan introduced the unique concept of GNH or Gross National Happiness instead of only focussing on Gross Domestic Product as an indicator of national wealth. Bhutan is the only place on Earth with a Ministry of Happiness.
Bhutan only cautiously opened its doors to foreign visitors in 1974, making a decision to follow a policy of “high value, low volume” tourism in order to limit the number of visitors and protect itself from the negative effects of tourism. Each foreign visitor is required to spend a minimum of US$250 per day and the government uses US$95 of this daily minimum payment to fund free education and health services for all its citizens and to upgrade the national infrastructure.
Roughly the size of Switzerland with a small population of 700,000 Bhutan’s almost untouched natural beauty is unparalleled anywhere. Therefore, a trip to Bhutan is a rare privilege, unlike other countries where anyone can easily travel.
We have created a one-off route for you, riding the whole length of the country from east to west and visiting remote, eastern Bhutan which very few other visitors have time to see. Distilled to capture the very best of everything Bhutan has to offer, your bespoke itinerary combines extensive mountain riding through spectacular primordial forests, enchanting architecture and charming villages, as well as days off to enjoy some local riding and exploration to give you an intimate insight into the ancient culture and pristine wilderness of Bhutan, rarely seen by visitors to this unbelievably beautiful Shangri La.
The trip is especially timed to allow you to be present at one of Bhutan’s most exciting annual festivals dating back to the Middle Ages, Jampay Lakhang, which takes place at an architectural wonder of a 1000-year-old monastery, stunningly located in a valley deep in the Bhutanese heartlands. To be at this amazing event is a highlight of the tour.
You will have with you your skilled and caring support team with vehicles including our fully qualified doctor Avneesh, tour mechanic, English guide as well as our English-speaking Bhutanese guide, who is always there ready to reveal the mysteries of this magical land.
Your trusty steed to carry you on this remarkable journey is the legendary Royal Enfield 500cc motorcycle which has proved itself time and again to be the most enjoyable and sturdy bike capable of handing the Himalayas at every level.
With a stable low center of gravity and easy handling, the Enfield is a pure pleasure to travel on and still the number one choice of riders anywhere in the Himalayas today.
The roads in Bhutan are mostly in excellent condition with virtually no traffic to be seen. The average riding altitude of 2000m (6000ft), is just right at this time of year when the trees will be changing to a riot of autumn hues in the crystal-clear Himalayan air as you cruise through the immense, wild and heavily forested, national parks.
You can expect clear blue-skied days and cool nights with traditional wood-burning stoves being used in some of the places you stay along the route. The average daytime temperatures will be 10, to 20C… just perfect for riding.
The culture of Bhutan is based on the ancient way of Tibetan Buddhism and there will be ample opportunity to step back in time to visit some of the many stupendous monastery forts known as Dzongs including world renowned Tigers Nest, where you will find a vibrant, alive body of monks still practising the ancient Buddhist traditions that were introduced to Bhutan by the visit of the enlightened Indian master Padmasambhava back in the 8th century.
As tourism is limited to the exclusive few, the inhabitants of Bhutan do not feel overwhelmed by visitors and offer a genuinely warm welcome everywhere to those who do make the journey. The happiness of the Bhutanese people is infectious and cannot help but permeate your soul and invigorate you. We guarantee that this is a trip of a lifetime that will keep you smiling for many years to come.
Picture yourself breathing in the fresh morning Himalayan air, the sound of the village cockerels in the distance, cattle bells and the fragrant smell of cedar wood smoke from the stove, blue skies emerging as the mist rises above the quiet forests and streams. You start your bike’s engine, pre-warmed by your attentive team, and appreciate the gentle thud thud of this classic machine. You open the throttle and move off onto the small empty mountain road. Looking around you at the awe-inspiring, crisp white peaks towering above and the beaming faces of your small group of fellow riders. Your spirit soars as you wonder what this incredible day has in store for you. This is the stuff of dreams, life doesn’t get any better than this.
